Is Lunch Important?

Lunch seems is a lightly debated topic. Do we need to eat lunch or do we not? For some, lunch is the easiest meal of the day to skip. Many feel it is not very important that you eat lunch as long as you are not hungry.

Despite what some think, lunch is a very important meal. It is easy to get caught up in work and other activities during the day and not feel like you have time to eat anything.

If you are a person that skips lunch with the idea that you are being a more valuable member of your company, or that you will get more done by not eating, you might want to reconsider your strategy. Studies have shown that eating regular meals throughout the day increases your overall productivity by a lot.

When you do not eat regularly it becomes more difficult to concentrate on tasks and you tend to make, slower, lesser quality decisions.

Don't think that since you don't usually get hungry during the day that this does not apply to you. This loss of concentration and low quality decision-making does not occur because of the hunger. It happens because when you don't have fresh food in your system, your blood sugar lowers. When you have low blood sugar it becomes harder for the human brain to focus and remember information it receives.

Last year I got a short-term job as a floor installer. I would wake up, get dressed and he would usually pick me up at 6:30 or 7:00.

The work was long and physically demanding. We hardly took any breaks the entire time that I worked for my employer. This included not taking a lunch break. We would work straight through the day until we finished the job.

I took a sandwich, but work seemed too urgent for me to set aside any time at all to eat it. By the time we would get working it would be dinner time and every day I would think to myself how pointless it seemed to even bring a sandwich.

What I found is that I was always angry and in a bad mood. Another think I noticed looking back, after my floor installing job was over, was that I was extremely productive in the mornings and didn't make many mistakes. However, as lunch time came and passed I found myself losing concentration and not making well thought out decisions.

I now know that if I would have taken even just 5 or 10 minutes out of the day to eat my sandwich and clear my mind a little I would have been a much more productive and valuable employee. I began to realize why eating lunch is important near the end of that job and ate at least a little lunch the last couple days.

I found that as I ate more regularly I became a much happier person. Those last few days seemed to flow nicely and I could tell that I was working harder and (more importantly) I was working smarter. I only wish I could go back and simply eat lunch everyday. I am sure that my working experience would have been much more enjoyable.

I hated almost every second of that job, but through it I learned why eating regularly is important.
So yes, lunch is a very important meal of your day. When you eat regularly you become a more productive, happier and healthier person. You don't need to take a long break. Just take a couple minutes to eat something and clear your mind. Trust me, eating lunch is well worth it.

An easy way to ensure that you eat a lunch is to use a lunch bag. You can use it to take to work, school or where ever you go during the day. I would recommend getting a lunch bag made out of neoprene (which you can find here ) as they are easier to clean and keep your lunch nice and insulated. You can find good information on lunch bags on this website about lunch bags.
